[0:00] Good morning, One Harbor. It is so good to be with you as we celebrate Easter this morning together.
[0:13] We're going to sing some songs this morning. We're going to hear about the hope that we have in Jesus. We invite you to just be present, be a part as we make much of Jesus together and we celebrate the fact that he is risen.
[0:30] Sing, who breaks the power?
[0:50] Who breaks the power of sin and darkness? Whose love is mighty and so much stronger? The King of glory, the King above all kings.
[1:10] Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder? Who leaves us breathless in awe and wonder? The King of glory, the King above all kings.
[1:25] This is amazing grace This is unfailing love That you would take my place That you would bear my cross That you laid down your life That I would be set free Jesus, I sing for all that you've done for me Yes, all that you've done for me Who brings?
[2:14] Who brings our chaos back into order? Who makes the orphan a son and daughter? The King of glory The King of glory Who rules the nations With truth and justice Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance The King of glory The King of glory The King of all kings Yeah This is amazing grace This is unfailing love That you would take my place That you would bear my cross That you laid down your life Why did he do it?
[3:10] That I would be set free Oh, Jesus, I sing for all that you've done for me You're the reason why we sing Jesus, you're worthy Worthy Sing Worthy is the Lamb Worthy is the Lamb who was slain Worthy is the King who conquered the grave Worthy is the Lamb who was slain Worthy is the King who conquered the grave Who conquered the grave Worthy is the Lamb who was slain Worthy is the King Who conquered the grave
[4:11] Worthy is the Lamb who was slain Worthy, worthy, worthy This is amazing grace This is unfailing love That you would take my place That you would bear my cross Oh, you laid down your life And I would be set free Oh, Jesus, I sing for all Say, worthy, worthy is the Lamb who was slain Worthy is the King Who conquered the grave Worthy is the Lamb who was slain King Jesus, you were worthy
[5:14] Oh, great the chasm that lay between us How high the mountain I could not climb In desperation In desperation I turned to heaven And spoke your name Into the night And through the darkness Your loving kindness Tore through the shadows The world of my soul The work is finished The end is written Jesus Christ, my living hope
[6:15] Who could imagine So great a mercy What heart could fathom Such boundless grace The God of ages Stepped down from glory To wear my sin To wear my sin And bear my shame The cross has spoken I am forgiven The King of kings calls me his own Beautiful Savior I'm yours forever Jesus Christ, my living hope Hallelujah Hallelujah
[7:16] He's the one who set me free Hallelujah Death has lost its grip on me You have broken every chain There's salvation in your name Jesus Christ, my living hope Jesus Christ, my living hope Hallelujah Hallelujah Praise the one who set me free Hallelujah Death has lost its grip on me You have broken every chain Death's salvation in your name Jesus Christ, my living hope Jesus Christ, my living hope Then came the morning That sealed the promise Your buried body began to breathe
[8:21] Out of the silence The roaring lion Declared the grave Has no claim on me Sing the morning Sing the morning Then came the morning That sealed the promise Your buried body Begant to breathe Begant to breathe Out of the silence Out of the silence The roaring lion Declared the grave Has no claim on me For Jesus, he owes His victory Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Praise the one who set me free
[9:22] Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Death has lost its grip on me You have broken every chain Death's salvation in your name Jesus Christ, my living hope Jesus Christ, my living hope God, you are my living hope Jesus, we declare that In this place today That you are the one Who we run to You bring us joy You bring us life You bring us grace You bring us mercy You bring us hope And we celebrate You, the resurrected king Today, this Easter We praise you in your name We pray Amen
[10:23] Amen Again guys It is so good to be with you This morning Take a moment Maybe just shoot a text To a friend Or a loved one Who you wish That you were alongside With this morning And we are going to carry on With the rest of our service I love you all Hey, Winn-Harbor Havelock This is Jesse So good that you are tuning in To our online Easter service Thanks for watching And to everybody else Who might be watching Thank you also For tuning in This is so weird to say this But happy Easter The fact that we have to say it Online through a video Instead of in person I guess it's just the time That we are living in Right now We don't really have Any other option This is a much more humble Scaled back Easter I'm sure for all of us That is true I mean typically For Christians Easter is the big Sunday It's the big thing We celebrate And everyone comes out Everyone piles in the churches We get dressed up And ladies wear big hats For whatever reason But more than all of that
[11:24] That Christians We're excited about Easter Because we're remembering And celebrating The fact that Jesus Rose from the dead Right Everything that we needed For our sins To be forgiven And washed away Was finished And completed When Jesus died On the cross And as one pastor said You know at the cross Jesus said It is finished And at the resurrection God the father said To that amen He seconded that So what is finished?
[11:51] The power of sin Is finished The power of death Is finished It's defeated The grave has no hold Over us Easter is about Jesus Bringing hope In the darkest moment And we're in a very Unexpectedly dark moment Right now We don't need To be together though Do we?
[12:11] To experience the hope Of the resurrection And just like in the Resurrection story We're about to read What we see is that Jesus finds us Where we are And gives us What we need Luke 24 We're gonna read from From verse 1 But on the first day Of the week At early dawn They went to the tomb Taking the spices They had prepared And they found the stone Rolled away from the tomb But when they went in They did not find The body of the Lord Jesus While they were Perplexed about this Behold two men Stood by them In dazzling apparel And as they were Frightened and bowed Their faces to the ground The men said to them Why do you seek The living among the dead?
[12:48] He is not here But is risen Remember how we told you While he was still In Galilee That the Son of Man Must be delivered Into the hands Of sinful men And be crucified And on the third day Rise And they remembered His words And returning from the tomb They told all these things To the eleven And all the rest Now it was Mary Magdalene And Joanna And Mary the mother of James And the other women Who told these things To the apostles But these words Seemed to them An idle tale And they did not believe But Peter Rose and ran To the tomb And stooping And looking in He saw the linen clothes By themselves And he went home Marveling At what had happened What we see In this story In this resurrection story Is this radical change That happens In Jesus' disciples See they first come They come to the grave And they come full of sorrow But they leave Very differently And that is what happens When the risen Jesus
[13:49] Invades our lives Jesus He comes and he meets us In our sorrow But he fills us with joy The details of this story Is actually helpful Because it helps us gauge The depth of the sorrow And the sadness That Jesus' disciples What these ladies Were experiencing At the time When they came to the tomb See they didn't come At a convenient time They came early Right It was inconvenient And they brought Expensive ointments And spices To finish Jesus' body For burial And you don't go through That effort For just anybody No you only go Through that effort You only spend That kind of money For people you love And we see that Is true for Jesus' disciples Man they love him And they miss him And they're grieving They're mourning his death See we mourn Whenever we lose Something precious to us And the more valuable a thing The more painful its loss And the deeper our sorrow
[14:50] That we feel And in the trauma Of our sorrow And the trauma Of that loss What we do is Man we reach out To find any kind of comfort We seek any kind of comfort That we can find And for these ladies Man it was coming to finish Preparing Jesus' body For burial Man this seems like An insignificant comfort But make no doubt This was a small comfort To them In this moment Where they could You know experience Experience some comfort In their sorrow They could count on Knowing where Jesus' grave was You know They could see it They could visit it They could be assured That his body was there And in times of sorrow When our world Is turned upside down We do that We look for comfort We look for consistency We look for something That could be an anchor In our lives But what if that What if that thing Is even taken away And that is what happens To these ladies The one thing That they had hope in Is taken away from them They rock up on the tomb
[15:52] And it's empty His body isn't anywhere And they don't move into hope They don't move into Well maybe that means No no Man they go straight to The worst possible scenario Their sorrow gets turned Even darker It says That they were perplexed Which means that They were so overwhelmed They were so confused They were so Strucken with despair That they just didn't know What to do They're frozen With indecision They're frozen with fear They're frozen with worry And the picture we get here Is one of reaching That place Where everything feels And seems impossible When we are ready To throw up our hands And just give up And Jesus He waits for them To get to this moment Before he meets them He isn't waiting for them To have it all together He is bringing them To the end of themselves And it is in that place When Jesus finally brings them
[16:53] Into the good news Of his resurrection Every possible comfort Is taken away Every possible bit Of control is gone Now let's admit man If that was us It would feel like It's own kind of death But this is the way Of following Jesus We don't experience Resurrection power Without first passing Through death And this isn't just true Of physical death Jesus also leads us Through the valley Of dying to ourselves Dying to our expectations Dying to our will Dying to our way But he does that For a reason He does that In order to bring us Into the place Of his resurrection life And this is where we find That he alone Nothing else Only Jesus Can be our comfort Only Jesus Can be our hope And here's what's amazing How he does it How he brings the ladies To this point How he gives them The good news It's so wonderful Because it's not generic And it's not cookie cutter I mean for these two women Jesus Or for these women
[17:54] Sorry Jesus sends two angels To preach the good news To them To tell them That he is alive And the message He gives Shows Jesus' love And kindness And thoughtfulness And care Toward these ladies He goes above And beyond To prove They are credible Witnesses To be believed See They give A detailed accounting Of Jesus' words When he taught them Regarding his resurrection And his death And not only Do they use The exact words Of Jesus But they also refer To the place That it happened This is insider information Right To strangers There's no way They could have known this It could have only come From Jesus himself And even though Jesus isn't there In person He is absolutely there In his message He knew Who was going To come to his grave He knew Who was going To be there At that empty tomb He knew What they needed To hear And when
[18:55] They needed To hear it And Jesus Is saying to them I haven't forgotten you I know you better Than you know yourself I remember that moment When I spoke These words of truth About me dying And then rising again I remember exactly Where you were When that happened Man Jesus What I love about Jesus Is what we see In these moments He cares about The little details As much as he cares About the big truths Today We may not get A personal invitation From Jesus A visitation From Jesus Sorry But he still Personally meets us In his truth And in the preaching Of his gospel And when Jesus Meets us like that It changes us It does In other gospel accounts The lady's response Is described as this Mixer of fear And joy And what happens To them In this moment Is this radical Change of emotions They came to a tomb Morning But they ran home Marveling And I love the word That Luke uses here
[19:55] Marveling It is so appropriate Because marveling Describes the emotional Response Someone would have To witnessing a miracle Or having a revelation It is a response Of joy It is a response Of wonder It is a response Of amazement It is a response Of hope And you see this In what they did next They ran Right They didn't walk They ran To tell the others The good news But bad reviews Here for the disciples Right At best They can't You know At best They get a mixed response For some The good news Prompted A few of the disciples To go and see The empty tomb For themselves And when they saw it They too marveled But for the others The news just brought Confusion They looked They heard And they said That's an idle tale Too unbelievable Not a significant source And instead of going To the tomb They walked away In the opposite direction Now We read this
[20:55] And we may be appalled At their response How could they do that But you know Who wasn't appalled At their response Jesus wasn't He doesn't reject them For being confused And doubting Actually He meets them In it Jesus Listens To our confusion And corrects us With his truth In verse 13 It says this That very day The same day Of his resurrection Two of them Were going to a village Named Emmaus About seven miles From Jerusalem And they were talking With each other About all these things That had happened And while they were Talking and discussing Together Jesus Himself Drew near And went with them But their eyes Were kept From recognizing him And he said to them What is this conversation That you are holding With each other As you walk And they stood still Looking sad Then one of them Named Cleopas Answered him Are you the only visitor To Jerusalem Who does not know The things that have Happened there In these days And he said to them What things And they said to him Concerning Jesus of Nazareth A man who was a prophet
[21:56] Mighty indeed And word before God And all the people And how our chief priests And rulers Delivered him up To be condemned To death And crucified him But we had hoped That he was the one To redeem Israel Yes and besides all this It is now the third day Since these things happened Moreover Some women of our company Amazed us They were at the tomb Early in the morning And when they did not Find his body They came back Saying that they Had even seen A vision of angels Who said that he was alive And some of those Who were with us Went to the tomb And found it Just as the women Had said But him They did not see Man this This part of the Resurrection story It reads a lot Like an episode Of Undercover Boss Right These disciples Are like being Brutally honest About where they're At with Jesus Not knowing That they're actually Talking to Jesus You know Like that Jesus guy Yeah we had bought Into all of this hype We thought he was the one We thought he was Israel's savior We thought he was The king that was Going to redeem us But it turns out He was just Another dead prophet
[22:57] Who did some Great miracles And preached Some really good sermons But you know Here's what's confusing Some women That we spent A lot of time with And followed Jesus With us Man they were at His tomb earlier This morning And they saw it And it was empty And they said They saw some angels Who told them That Jesus was alive And on top of that Some of our friends Who also followed Jesus They ran And they also confirmed That the tomb Was empty You kind of pick up From these guys That they are wrestling With what to believe They are totally confused But this is what happens When we try to understand God Through our circumstances At best we get confused And at worst We turn him into something He is not And think about the question Many of us have In response to tragedies How can a good God Allow this to happen And in this passage Their circumstances Lead them to ask A question How could Jesus Have been the Messiah
[23:57] He is dead Those are the circumstances So what does Jesus do He doesn't abandon them He doesn't stay quiet He enters into their confusion And helps them out Verse 25 And Jesus said to them Oh foolish ones And slow of heart To believe all that The prophets had spoken Was it not necessary That the Christ Should suffer these things And enter into his glory And beginning with Moses And all the prophets He interpreted them In all the scriptures The things concerning himself What I love about this Road to Emmaus interaction Is that Jesus doesn't act Like a hurried salesman Right He's not the always be closing Kind of guy Always got to get them To a decision Always got to make them Cross the line of faith He's not like that And he's very slow And patient with these guys He listens to their confusion He perceives that their hearts Are slow to believe And he doesn't freak out He knows that they're not Going to be easily manipulated
[24:57] Or emotionally manipulated Or forced into making A quick decision Jesus is okay with that He knows that about them Maybe that's you Maybe you're one Who wrestles with belief And trying to understand Who Jesus is You know what Jesus knows that about you And he's okay with that And he will meet you there In fact He may already be doing that Without you knowing it Sometimes faith hits us quick Like the Spice Girls At the empty tomb But others For others man Faith is a wrestling And you know what Jesus doesn't favor One type of person Over the other He just doesn't He meets us All right where we are He is happy To come alongside us He is willing To put in the time He walks seven miles With these guys Teaching them The whole way Jesus is ready To do whatever it takes He knows their confusion He knows their doubt But you know what He brings his truth
[25:58] Into that On this road to Emmaus We learn How patient Jesus is How persistent Jesus is And how personal Jesus is He draws near to us He listens to our doubts And he brings his truth But you know what's interesting Is after seven miles And who knows how many hours These guys have spent With Jesus They are still blind To the fact That Jesus is with them So does that mean That truth Really isn't that important This kind of brings up A common division Of camps in the church Which is better To have To have Jesus' truth Or Jesus' presence But here we see In the story Jesus is saying No it's not either or It's both It's yes to both In verse 28 He says this So they drew near To the village To which they were going He acted As if he were going further And they urged him Strongly saying Stay with us For it is toward evening And the day is now far spent So he went in To stay with them And when he was At table with them
[26:58] He took the bread And blessed And broke it And gave it to them And their eyes were open And they recognized him And he vanished From their sight They said to each other Did not our hearts Burn within us While we talked While he talked to us On the road While he opened to us The scriptures And they rose That same hour And returned to Jesus And they found the eleven And those who were with him Gathered together Saying the Lord Has risen indeed And has appeared To Simon Then they told What had happened On the road And how he was known To them In the breaking Of the bread And here's the beautiful Thing that we see In this part Of the resurrection story Jesus' truth And Jesus' presence Make our hearts alive Jesus Made these men's hearts Burn with the truth That he taught On the road But he was at the table Funny enough He was at the breaking Of the bread That their eyes Were opened to see him Now Jesus isn't trying To commend one Over the other
[27:58] He's saying Our faith is built On both We need the truth That comes into our hearts And we need Jesus To open our eyes To see him It is tough To describe What goes on When you first believe You kind of have To experience it To really understand it And to a Christian The imagery Of hearts burning And eyes being opened It really does make sense It's getting a sudden Sense of understanding And faith That feels a lot like Our eyes suddenly Being open To seeing something We just hadn't seen before Now I can't imagine What it's like Being blind And I'm glad That Jesus came And opened the eyes Of the blind And I'm so pumped That in heaven Everybody's eyes Are going to be open To see Jesus But the Bible Likens unbelief To spiritual blindness And having cold Hearts of stone We're all familiar With the saying Seeing is believing Right You can't believe A sunset is beautiful Until you see one To see it
[29:00] Is to believe it Is to experience it Which is to know It's beauty And it is the same With Jesus We can't believe Until our eyes Are open And then We can know So the question is What makes this Spiritual eye opening Happen?
[29:18] What makes this Burning heart thing Happen? Well here's the thing guys It's nothing we can do It's all God's work If you notice In all these stories Jesus Sought out His disciples They didn't come Searching for him At least Not alive They didn't come Searching for a living Jesus And it is the same For us Jesus Still meets us That way He still comes And he still Finds us And he still Sees us In our blindness And in our unbelief And he does for us What he can't do For ourselves He opens our eyes To see He makes our hearts Alive But then what he does He sends us out With his truth And presence So that others Can believe Jesus sends us Into the world With his truth And his presence Verse 44 He says this Then he said to them These are my words That I spoke to you While I was still with you That everything written About me In the law of Moses And the prophets And the Psalms Must be fulfilled Then he opened their minds To understand the scriptures And said to them Thus it is written That the cry
[30:18] Should suffer And on the third day Rise from the dead And that repentance For the forgiveness of sin Should be proclaimed In his name To all nations Beginning with Jerusalem You are witnesses Of these things And behold I am sending The promise Of my father Upon you Which was the Holy Spirit But stay in the city Until you are clothed With this power From on high I want to speak To those of us Who would call Ourselves Christians Today I want to ask us this How is Jesus Speaking to you today Is he bringing joy Into your sadness Is there truth There that Is meeting you Where you are confused And I want to encourage you Right now man Live in the joy Of Jesus' truth And presence And let's take it To the world Let me encourage you Let's take it To the world So that others Can believe too Now if you're Watching this And not a Christian Man so glad
[31:19] That you are You're checking us out You're watching I hope that during this time You felt your heart Burning inside you As we talked about Jesus Maybe you're thinking Okay so now what Well It is very simple You take a step of faith You talk to God I know you can't see him I know that may be weird And feel really unnatural But that is what Taking a step in faith Often feels like Talk to him I know you can't see him But he is there with you And he is listening In fact He's been there Leading you up to this point The Bible says that We say with our mouths What our hearts Are already believing And you could pray this prayer Jesus you've opened my eyes To know you are real To know that you're alive Be my Lord Be my Savior Forgive me of my sins Jesus promises That if you call out to him For salvation You will be saved
[32:20] And I want to encourage you If you stop And you prayed that prayer It doesn't have to be long It could be really quick I am so pumped for you I am so stoked And I would invite you To join us In taking communion I know we're not doing this Together all right now But this is the time We're going to do that We're going to take communion And like we learned In this passage The disciples eyes were opened When Jesus broke bread with them Communion What it does It feeds our faith It reminds us That we live In the resurrection life Of Jesus We don't take communion To remember a Savior That is still dead Now we remember That he died But he rose again And this living Savior Invites us To his table Invites us Invites us To eat His body That was broken The bread that we eat And to drink the cup The juice that we drink And I want you To join me In that And I would also
